This project investigates the physical/psychological condition one experiences through the process of self-objectification. Coburn explores concepts related to the person as object and the photograph as object: the sitter as commodity and the print/media as the vehicle for distribution. In addition, this work illustrates the direct connection between an individual’s material possessions and that individual’s personal identity. The model is asked to participate in a photo shoot, and to approach the situation with the intent of making a photograph for a lover, significant other, or an ideal mate. Coburn’s long-term goal for this project is to study a widely diverse cross-section of people in an effort to understand how age, race, gender, sexual orientation and varying social/economic backgrounds affect a person’s approach and reaction to the process of self-objectification. Personal narratives from Coburn’s subjects accompany the photographs.
Above Photograph: “Paco” by Daniel W. Coburn for the OBJECT:AFFECTION project.

New Directions: Moments of Being @ Wall Space Gallery

Curated by the creative and talented David Bram, creator and publisher of Fraction Magazine, Moments of Being is an exhibit that represents the visual connection and the emotional relationship between photographer and subject.

David’s job was extremely difficult, paring down to 38 images from over 1400. All the images submitted presented a challenge, defining that moment, looking for that emotional bond captured through the lens.

Join us in Santa Barbara in January, or Seattle in February. We are looking at additional venues as the year progresses, so stay tuned.

January 4th – 29th, 2011 | wall space gallery Santa Barbara, California

Daniel W. Coburn is a contemporary photographer whose visually arresting images have garnered national and international praise. Selections from his body of work have been featured in prestigious exhibitions, including Top 40 at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art and the National Competition at SOHO Photo Gallery in New York. His photographic works are held in the permanent collections of the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, the Mariana Kistler-Beach Museum of Art, the Mulvane Museum of Art and the Moraine Park Museum. Daniel has published two monographs of his work: Between Earth and Sky and Rediscovering Paradise. His most recent body of work, OBJECT:AFFECTION, represents a photographic study on the process of self-objectification. Coburn received his BFA with an emphasis in photography from Washburn University and is currently studying photography as a graduate student at the University of New Mexico.

James Dietsch graduated from the University of New Mexico with a BFA in photography and printmaking in 1978. Becoming seriously ill from contact with photography and printmaking chemicals, Dietsch ceased contact with photographic chemicals putting his photography endeavors on hold. After 25 years of worked full-time in the emergency department of a psychiatric hospital and part-time at KNME-TV, and writing fiction to satisfy his creative needs, Dietsch retired. With the advent of digital photography, Dietsch started making photographs again. He took classes at UNM from Joyce Neimanas, where she invited him to help for the following nine semesters until she retired in 2010. Dietsch received a commission from the City of Albuquerque to make Light in Albuquerque, a suite of ten photographs that celebrate the southwest light in the city. This series of photographs now resides at The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History and at Albuquerque’s Lomas / Tramway Public Library on permanent exhibition. Dietsch currently has photographs in the group exhibition Shadows at SCA Contemporary Art in Albuquerque. For more information, please www.deech.net

David Grant Noble is a photographer and writer. Raised in New England, he began photographing seriously in 1962 while serving in Vietnam. Later, he documented Mohawk Indian steelworkers in New York City and Ojibwa wild rice harvesters in Wisconsin and Minnesota. As a writer, photographer, and editor, he has produced ten books and been represented by galleries in New York, Santa Fe, San Francisco, and other cities. His latest book, In the Places of the Spirits (SAR Press, 2010), features duotone plates of ancient cultural landscapes in the American Southwest, a substantive text, and Foreword by N. Scott Momaday.

671 submissions were made by photographers worldwide to CENTER’s Project Competition this year. OBJECT: AFFECTION was selected for an honorable mention by a distinguished panel of jurors.

As a result, I was invited to Review Santa Fe and had the exciting opportunity to meet with many talented artists and industry professionals.

Participants ranked which reviewers they preferred to meet with, and each photographer was assigned his/her or her meetings based on a lottery system. I met with the following people:

Brian Paul Clamp – Director of ClampArt Gallery
Amani Olu – Co-Founder of Humble Arts
Robert Morton – Independent Publishing Agent
Debra Klomp Ching – Director of Klompching Gallery
Avery Lozada – Vice President, Trade Sales Director, DAP inc.
Mary Virginia Swanson – Consultant, MV Swanson and Associates
Laura Valenti – Program Director, Newspace Center for Photography
Ann Pallesen – Gallery Director, Photographic Center Northwest

My experience Review Santa Fe was great overall. I had a great conversation with Amani Olu of Humble Arts Foundation in New York. This has already led to a solid opportunity that I will write about later as everything comes together. My meeting with Avery Lozada of D.A.P. was productive as she gave some contact information for people that I might speak with regarding a book deal. I also had an informal meeting with David Bram of Fraction Magazine which seems promising for an online publication opportunity this Fall.

I met many talented photographers while I was there including Sam Comen who won the Project Launch Award for The Lost Hills Project and Toni Greaves who won a Juror’s Choice Award in the Project Competition.

As a scholarship recipient, I owe a big thanks to CENTER. Without their financial support, I would not have been able to attend the event. A thanks to all of the reviewers who spent time and provided insight into my continuing journey as an artist.

Here a few excerpts from Caitlin’s response to our photo shoot:

“Each item I put on emphasized things I like about my body and masked those which I do not. The heavily boned corset shrinks my waist by several inches and therefore gives the illusion of my breasts and hips being quite large. I find this exaggerated hourglass look sexy and feminine.”

“After the shoot I realized that I had just posed scantily clad for some of the most intimate photos I’ve ever taken. These are going to give the viewer an insight into my most basic instinct as a woman: attracting a suitable partner.”
